ABNT NBR 17240 and the ISO 7240 series: what the standards require
Understand the role of ABNT NBR 17240 and the ISO 7240 series in the design, installation and components of fire detection and alarm systems.
In Brazil, the design, installation and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems have as their main reference ABNT NBR 17240. The ISO 7240 series (adopted in the country as ABNT NBR ISO 7240, in several parts) defines requirements for the system components.
What each one covers
NBR 17240 addresses general system requirements: types of detection, device distribution, manual call points, signaling, line supervision and design and maintenance criteria. The ISO 7240 series is divided into parts that specify individual equipment — for example, control and indicating equipment (CIE) (part 2) and manual call points (part 11), among others.
Why does this matter in everyday life
Following the rules is not bureaucracy: it is what guarantees that the system actually detects the beginning of a fire in time and alerts reliably. Non-compliant projects may be rejected by the fire department and, worse, fail at a critical moment.
Certified components + standardized design
The ideal setup combines certified components (complying with ISO 7240 parts) with a design that respects NBR 17240. Thus, each part is proven to be suitable and the whole works as a coherent system.
